Experience
Setting up a lifetime discretionary trust into which a client could settle some of his private company shares up to the value of his nil rate band. This was with a view to reducing the overall estate and being able to claim discounts for minority shareholdings in due course
Advising the trustees of a life interest trust on an application to remove one of their fellow trustees who had lost capacity, but was also the life tenant of the trust
Preparing a deed of variation for an estate where the deceased had made considerable lifetime gifts to his children, which far exceeded the available nil rate bands. Although the children had each received the same total amount, the order of the gifts belied their father's intended equal treatment. The deed of variation, put in place at their request as residuary beneficiaries, transferred the burden of the tax to the Estate such that the children (as residuary beneficiaries) would bear the tax equally.
